The new Amarillo team slated to join the Class AA Texas League in 2019 is looking for community input in selecting a new brand, as the franchise is running a name-the-team contest.
The San Antonio Missions are moving to a new Amarillo ballpark next season, but the Missions name and brand will remain in San Antonio, as the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (Class AAA; Pacific Coast League) will begin play there next season. That means a new identity is needed for the Amarillo team.
Fans can enter the contest by going to the team’s website at AmarilloProBaseball.com and clicking on the “Name The Team” Sweepstakes graphic.
The sweepstakes will run until May 4, giving fans two weeks to submit their most creative ideas. Fans are encouraged to suggest a local name, along with an explanation of why they feel their suggestion perfectly embodies Amarillo. Judging will be based on originality, creativity, uniqueness, regional relevance, and appropriateness for audience.
The fan whose submission leads to the team’s new name will receive the ultimate VIP Baseball Package – Four Season Tickets for the Inaugural 2019 season, a personalized Team Jersey and an opportunity to throw out a ceremonial first pitch during the 2019 season.
Following two weeks of name entries, the top five to seven names selected will be listed on the website (AmarilloProBaseball.com) for fan voting, which will take place in mid-to-late May. The winning name will be revealed at a press conference this fall. All finalists will also be invited to the unveiling event.
The multi-purpose event venue where the team will play is expected to open in April 2019, marking the return of affiliated baseball to Amarillo for the first time in 37 years.
