Fayetteville Team Name to be Revealed in April

The name of Fayetteville, NC‘s upcoming Carolina League franchise will be unveiled on April 7, according to the latest update. 

Currently playing as the Buies Creek Astros, the franchise will rebrand before moving into a new downtown Fayetteville ballpark in 2019. A name the team contest was launched last June, featuring a slate of five finalists that included FatbacksFly TrapsJumpersWood Dogs, and Woodpeckers.

While it is not expected to take effect until the 2019 season, the new name is set to be unveiled at an event on April 7. That news was delivered by baseball committee officials during a meeting on Tuesday. More from The Fayetteville Observer:

City Councilman and committee chairman Jim Arp said the name of the baseball team will be revealed at a special event on April 7.

“It’ll either be the Woodpeckers or the Fatbacks,” Arp said. “As I understand, it is between those two and they will unveil the colors and the logo and all of that. It will be pretty exciting.”

Construction of the new $33-million Fayetteville ballpark is on track to be completed in time for Opening Day next year. The Astros made their Carolina League debut in 2017, playing the season at Campbell University’s Jim Perry Stadium. The team will play there once again in 2018.
