In a significant development for ballpark technology, Comcast will install state-of-the-art Ethernet lines at SunTrust Park, the future home of the Atlanta Braves.
Some of our coverage of the upcoming SunTrust Park has delved into the ballpark’s technology, which is expected to introduce some new trends. It was previously announced that Comcast’s role in the project would extend into delivering high-speed internet to the ballpark and the surrounding development, but additional details emerged after an announcement earlier this month. Comcast is placing two 100 Gigabit-per-second (Gbps) Ethernet lines at SunTrust Park. This is not only intended to provide fans with high-speed internet, but streamline the Braves operations, as the team’s Georgia-based minor league sqauds–the Rome Braves (Low A; Sally league) and Gwinnett Braves (Class AAA; International League)–and the Danville Braves (Rookie; Appalachian League) will be connected to the network.
According to Comcast, this will be a fairly significant development not only within MLB’s ranks, but across major sports. More from the Atlanta Business Journal:
Comcast told Atlanta Business Chronicle the only other major sports stadium that one could possibly compare SunTrust Park to is the San Francisco 49ers’ Levi’s Stadium.
“But even then, you’re talking 10-gigs versus 100-gigs at the Braves park,” the company said in an e-mailed statement.
Comcast Regional Senior Vice President said Doug Guthrie the speed and capacity of Comcast’s fiber network establishes SunTrust Park as the most technologically advanced stadium in the country.
Additionally, Comcast noted it entered a multi-year technology and real estate partnership with the Braves in March 2015 to deliver multi-terabit network capabilities to SunTrust Park and the surrounding community, making it the most technologically advanced mixed-use development in the U.S.
SunTrust Park is on track to open next season. You can view the full statement from Comcast here.
