Following a contest with a local school, the Lexington Legends (Low A; Sally League) will install a rock climbing wall at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. As part of their Stache Tank competition, the Legends accepted design submissions from teams at the STEAM Academy in Lexington, with the winning entry coming from a group of six students.
Located behind the right field fence, this 30 feet by 18 feet rocking climbing wall will serve as a new amenity at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. The area surrounding the rock climbing wall will be equipped with lockers for the climbers, as well as picnic tables that offer a view of the field. Currently, this location is utilized for a basketball court.
STEAM students Marcus Alzner, Noah Bentley, Julia Castorena, Hannah Kern, Ethan Martion, and Ava Schalk teamed up on the winning project.
“Stache Tank was an exciting experience for everyone concerned,” said Legends President/CEO Andy Shea, who presented certificates to the winning team Thursday morning at STEAM. “We look forward to working with the winning group to help this project become a reality.”
In addition, all ninth grade students at STEAM will participate in creating a mural on an existing wall near the basketball court.
There was another component to the Stache Tank competition, which involved students from the local William Wells Brown Elementary submitting ideas for a giveaway this season. Slap bracelets were announced as the winning item today, and they will be given to the first 1,000 fans in attendance at Whitaker Bank Ballpark on May 13.
“The students showed great creativity in putting their ideas and presentations together,” said Shea, who presented certificates to the members of the winning team at a school assembly Friday. “It was a pleasure for us to work with them, and I think the slap bracelet will be a very popular item.”
Once it arrives, the rock climbing wall will join several other new amenities at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. Earlier this week, the Legends unveiled a series of upgrades to the ballpark, including a Bullpen Patio, an expanded entry plaza, and a renovated team store.
