The Wilmington Blue Rocks (High Class A; Carolina League) are hosting the California-Carolina League All-Star Game at Frawley Stadium on June 17, 2014.
This will be the second time Wilmington has hosted this inter-league All-Star event.
“We are excited about the opportunity to host an event of this caliber,” said Blue Rocks general manager Chris Kemple. “This game will bring some of the finest Advanced-A players in baseball, as well as certain future Major Leaguers, to Wilmington. Moreover, we are equally excited to showcase the city of Wilmington and the newly renovated Riverfront with all of its many attractions.”
For the first time in its 17-year history, the Blue Rocks will turn the Advanced-A All-Star event into a two-day extravaganza, which will include a fan fest/hitting challenge at Frawley Stadium on Monday, June 16, followed by the game on Tuesday, June 17.
“The move to a two-day event will only help increase the excitement surrounding what is already one of the premiere fan experiences in Minor League Baseball,” said Carolina League president John Hopkins. “If next year’s festivities are anything like when the Blue Rocks hosted in 2002, I am confident that all fans, players and team representatives will be treated to a first-class event full of fun and excitement.”
In 2002, when the Blue Rocks last hosted, the game ended in a 3-3 tie after 10 innings. Future Big Leaguers Rocco Baldelli and Josh Hamilton were named All-Star players that season. In the last half-decade alone, the game has featured notable players such as Buster Posey, Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas and Jackie Bradley, Jr.
This year’s game is at San Jose’s Municipal Stadium.
