Reports: Mets to host 2013 All-Star Game at Citi Field

Citi Field

Not exactly a surprise: New York media outlets are reporting Major League Baseball will be announcing that the 2013 All-Star Game will be played at Citi Field, home of the New York Mets.

It’s been expected for months that the Mets would land the 2013 game. MLB awards the game alternately between the league; the 2012 game will be played at Kauffman Stadium, home of the Kansas City Royals. The New York Post is reporting a Wednesday press conference at City Hall wil be the occasion for the announcement; the New York Times is reporting the same.

Some see an issue looming in 2014, when it will be the American League’s turn to host the event. There will be lots of sentimental arguments among MLB insiders to award that game to the Chicago Cubs on the 100th anniversary of the opening of Wrigley Field. If recent history is any indication, that sort of milestone isn’t as important to the commissioner than you’d think: the Red Sox were never in the running to host the 2012 All-Star Game to mark the 100th anniversary of the opening of Fenway Park. We expect the Minnesota Twins to make a big pitch to host the 2014 game at Target Field
