Mr. Moon: Asheville’s mystery man

Mr. MoonThe newest member of the Asheville Tourists (Low Class A; Sally League), Mr. Moon, apparently will remain somewhat of a mystery man, as a name-the-mascot contest ended up with no resolution to the first name of the rib-lovin’ mascot.

For the past two weeks, the South Atlantic League team has conducted on-line voting to help determine the first name of the club’s new mascot, Mr. Moon. Fifty-four percent of the fans participating in the survey voted to refer to the newcomer simply as “Mr. Moon” as opposed to one of the five other names that were deemed finalists.

A random drawing was held by the team to determine the winner of the corresponding contest to name Mr. Moon. Barry Master is the recipient of two season tickets to the Tourists home games for the 2011 campaign.

Officially, Mr. Moon has a first name, which was the one that placed second in the balloting.

Mr. Moon is part of a new identity program being introduced by the Tourists for the 2011 season. Other changes include new team colors as well as new uniforms, which will be unveiled later this spring. The Tourists also have a new concessionaire that will bring higher quality food items to fans at McCormick Field.

“We’re excited about many of the changes we are making in addition to our normal preparations for the season,” said Brian DeWine, president of the Tourists. “The response to our new logos and caps continues to be outstanding. There’s a lot of positive energy taking place around the ballpark, and we’re looking forward to incorporating our fans into the process as the season draws nearer.”
