Gov. Dave Heineman, not always a fan of the project, is scheduled to be part of today's groundbreaking of a new Omaha Royals (Class AAA; Pacific Coast League) ballpark in Sarpy County.
Heineman's office was reportedly a key player in killing legislation that would have given state and local tax money to the $25-million ballpark project. Despite the snub, Sarpy County decided to go ahead with the development and will reportedly seek state money during the next session of the state legislature.
Despite the past clashes, it's a good think Heineman is involved in the groundbreaking: he is governor, after all. For Sarpy County and Omaha Royals officials, the groundbreaking will be a reason for big celebration: not many people gave this project much credit when first involved, but as of right now all systems are go.
