He was brought in as interim CEO to search for a new CEO. Beeston put together a very strong team — GM Pat Gillick masterminded things in the front office and manager Cito Gaston translated that into wins on the field — and there’s no doubt the Blue Jays CEO position should be a plum one: the Jays have an engaged owner (Ted Rogers) who is willing to spend to win, and they control their own facility. The Tampa Bay Rays showed a team other than Boston or New York can win in the American League East, though, and they did it without spending a lot of money. A new CEO may need to transform things to more of an extent than the general fans realize, though: the team isn’t known for its friendly relationships with its minor-league affiliates, and there should be an atmosphere where players want to play in Toronto, not needing to be wooed by J.P. Ricciardi. More from Canwest News Service.
