Mets Could Visit Syracuse for Exhibition Game

Though no official announcement has been made, it appears that the New York Mets could visit the home of the Syracuse Mets (Class AAA; International League) for an exhibition game this spring.

Considerable change has taken place in Syracuse, set into motion by the Mets’ purchase of the then Syracuse Chiefs ahead of the 2018 season. Syracuse spent 2018 in the final season of a player development contract with the Washington Nationals, before becoming the Triple-A affiliate of the New York Mets and rebranding this offseason to match the identity of its parent club/owner.

As another move that could strengthen their ties to Syracuse, the New York Mets are considering a visit to NBT Bank Stadium this spring for an exhibition game. No official announcement has been made, however, so it remains to be seen if the game takes place. Still, it appears that the major league Mets have a window to visit Syracuse in late March. More from Syracuse.com:

A spokesperson for the New York Mets said Monday that the team is considering playing an exhibition game this spring at NBT Bank Stadium. Nothing has been set, however. The Mets own the Syracuse franchise and this is the first year New York will put its players on the NBT Bank Stadium field.

The Mets’ last exhibition game is March 25 vs. Baltimore, and the team opens its regular season March 28 in Washington. It’s possible another exhibition contest could be scheduled for Syracuse between those two dates.

Exhibitions that feature a major league parent club visiting one of its minor-league affiliates typically take place in late March as spring training winds down. If a game for Syracuse is announced, NBT Bank Stadium will join a slate of MiLB ballparks hosting MLB exhibitions this spring that includes Memphis’s AutoZone Park, Albuqerque’s Isotopes Park, Nashville’s First Tennessee Park, and Omaha’s Werner Park.
