No decision yet on Biloxi ballpark opening

Biloxi Shuckers logoThe exact opening day for MGM Park, home of the Biloxi Shuckers (Class AA; Southern League), won’t be set until after the beginning of the year.

Construction of the new ballpark is ongoing; installation of prefabricated seating is taking place now, with installation of lighting due in coming days. The attached parking garage is halfway completed.

The new ballpark is currently slated to open with an April 20-24 series, as the team will begin the 2015 season on the road. And while it looks like an April opening is certainly possible, the team ownership will wait until early next year to decide on a specific date. From AP:

It’s still too early to know when the $36 million stadium north of the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino will be ready for the team to play ball.

“We’re still waiting to get through the first of the year and about 60 to 90 days out,” said [Tim] Bennett.

The team management will determine if they need to play the first games on the road or at another location, he said.

The Shuckers are the relocating Huntsville Stars. Miles Prentice sold majority interest in the team to Ken Young (owner of several other MiLB teams, including the Albuquerque Isotopes) and other investors earlier this year.
