Simmons Field lease approved for Northwoods League team

Northwoods LeagueThe summer-collegiate Northwoods League could return to Simmons Field in 2014, as the Kenosha Parks Commission approves a lease with the owners of the Madison Mallards and Wisconsin Rapids Rafters.

The ballpark is the former home to the Kenosha Twins (Low Class A; Midwest League), the Kenosha Mammoths (independent; Frontier League) and the Kenosha Kroakers (summer collegiate; Northwoods League). It’s a little run down, to be sure, and the game plan from the Northwoods League ownership is to put some money into the facility, including some new seating.

We’ve covered the topic before; while the City Council needs to give approval to the lease, most of the important details have been worked out, and as one member of the Common Council said at the parks meeting, there doesn’t seem to be any serious opposition to the lease. However, the Common Council is expected to take up the issue next week, and at that point the public will be invited to comment.
