Oscar Tavares, a star last season with the Quad Cities River Bandits (Low Class A; Midwest League), inadvertently became an Internet meme over the weekend because of how he was labeled during a St. Louis Cardinals spring-training game broadcast.
Tavares, who had a strong season for the River Bandits in 2011 (.386, 8 home runs and 62 RBI in 78 games for the River Bandits, winning the Midwest League batting crown), has gotten a chance to show his stuff for the Cardinals this spring. But the above screencap has been making the rounds: Tavares wasn’t worthy of getting a spot in the broadcast lineup and was tagged with the unfortunate moniker. He has time: Tavares won’t be 20 until this coming June.
