The Jackson Generals (Class AA; Southern League) are proposing upgrades to the playing field at the Ballpark at Jackson, including a total replacement of the playing field.
The outfield turf dates back 16 years, when the ballpark opened. From the Jackson Sun:
Monday’s doubleheader against the Mississippi Braves was postponed due to unplayable field conditions, marking the third time this season fans have been turned away due to problem spots in the outfield. [GM Jason] Compton said this has been a problem for the past two seasons.
“We’ve been having problems on and off with the water not draining,” Compton said. “It’s due to about four-and-a-half inches from the sand base that is just organic thatch that acts as a sponge.”
Compton said last year the problem spots were in left field, but Marty Wallace and the grounds crew has done an outstanding job with the necessary patchwork.
