A statue of Miss Babe Ruth, the iconic Labrador Retriever mascot for the Greensboro Grasshoppers (Low Class A; Sally League), was stolen and subsequently recovered — but it can be yours, as the team is auctioning it away after arranging for a replacement.
“Due to the proficient work of the Greensboro and High Point Police Departments, Miss Babe Ruth has been returned home to NewBridge Bank Park,” said President and General Manager Donald Moore. “Though we have moved forward with a replacement statue due to the damage, we are determined to see something positive come from this unfortunate event.”
The team will put the opportunity to own the recovered Miss Babe Ruth statue and accompanying prize pack (including baseball cards and a chance to walk out on the field with her) on eBay. All proceeds from the auction will be earmarked for veterinary services of the Greensboro Police Department K-9 Unit.
“We are undoubtedly grateful to both the Greensboro and High Point Police Departments for their service,” said Moore. “Miss Babe Ruth is an icon in this community and we are working diligently to return her likeness to the ballpark as swiftly as possible.”
Acting on tips received through Crime Stoppers, Greensboro and High Point Police arrested a person in connection with the weekend theft. The statue was promptly returned to the Hoppers by local law enforcement.
Bidding for the item will begin Friday, July 15 and will conclude Sunday, July 24 at noon. It’s not up as of now, so check eBay a little later in the day.
