Developer and Las Vegas 51s (Class AAA; Pacific Coast League) owner Howard Hughes Corp. is planning a 14-story hotel next to Las Vegas Ballpark, the team’s upcoming home.
The 2018 season marked the end of the 51s’ run at Cashman Field, as the team will play at the new Las Vegas Ballpark in Downtown Summerlin starting next season. The area already features several amenities–including City National Arena, the training facility for the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights–and could add a new 14-story, 267-room hotel in the coming years.
Under the current plans, the hotel would be constructed on land just south of Las Vegas Ballpark and serve visitors to the facility and surrounding attractions. A vote on the concept by Clark County commissioners is slated for Wednesday. More from the Las Vegas Review-Journal:
The hotel would offer travelers a place to stay in the Las Vegas suburbs that is walking distance from Red Rock Resort, shops and eateries at Downtown Summerlin, the City National Arena ice rink, and Las Vegas Ballpark. It is also part of Howard Hughes executives’ goal to develop a 200-acre stretch of land next to the mall, off Sahara Avenue and the 215 Beltway.
Howard Hughes spokesman Tom Warden declined to comment on the hotel project, saying the company would discuss it “in the near future.”
Mike Mixer, executive managing director of real estate brokerage Colliers International’s Las Vegas office, said the area is “ripe” for more hotel rooms, even though the 64-acre, 796-room Red Rock is right nearby.
Mixer said there has always been demand for nongaming hotels in Las Vegas, and he expects that to grow as the valley’s population expands.
Planning for the new Las Vegas Ballpark is just one part of a busy offseason for the 51s. Besides the move from Cashman Field to the new Summerlin facility, the team is in the midst of a rebranding for the 2019 season. Next season will also mark the first year in a new player development contract with the Oakland Athletics.
