Augusta Plans Lake Olmstead Stadium Repairs

Augusta officials are planning repairs to Lake Olmstead Stadium, a move to allow the former home of the Augusta GreenJackets (Low A; South Atlantic League) to host non-baseball events.

The 2018 season was the GreenJackets’ first at SRP Park–a new ballpark that is positioned as the centerpiece of the larger Riverside Village development in North Augusta, SC. SRP Park replaced Augusta, GA’s Lake Olmstead Stadium as the team’s home, and Augusta has been considering what to do with Lake Olmstead Stadium since the GreenJackets’ departure.

Discussion about Lake Olmstead Stadium’s future has mostly revolved around it being repurposed rather than demolished, but a recent estimate suggested that it would cost $640,000 for a full-scale renovation. For now, Augusta officials are discussing more modest repairs to the facility. Some–such as the removal protective netting–would eliminate baseball-specific amenities, while others would be aimed at safety repairs, cosmetic improvements, and modifications to make the venue more suitable for events such as concerts and festivals. More from WJBF.com:

Recreation officials did not recommend commissioners do the entire $640 thousand dollars in repairs, saying the need is to concentrate on seven areas. One was to repair the deck in right field for a VIP area, and work on the outfield wall to make a gate.

“There’s a section of fence we want to remove out there to allow gate access, so trucks, rigs, vans those kind of things can get in. And make repairs to the rest rooms,” says Recreation and Parks Director Glenn Parker.

City leaders seemed satisfied that would be good enough to begin holding events.

“I rely on the experts to say what is needed to ensure that the facility is safe and it will provide a good service to the people,” said Commissioner Dennis Williams.

The GreenJackets played their last game at Lake Olmstead Stadium in September 2017, and opened SRP Park–our 2018 Ballpark of the Year–on April 12 of this year.
