Clarksville to Discuss Revised Sports Complex Plan

On Thursday, Clarksville, TN officials will discuss a revised plan for a sports complex that includes a venue for a summer-collegiate Prospect League team.

Clarksville, TN officials have been debating a proposal for a sports complex that would include soccer fields, as well as a multi-use venue. In addition to potentially landing a Prospect League team, the multi-use facility would be designed to host several other types of events.

Earlier this month, the Clarksville City Council voted against a plan that called for acquiring 409 acres for the project. A scaled-down version of the complex is now set to go before the council, with the new plan calling for the acquisition of roughly 304 acres. Despite the diminished size of the project’s footprint, officials say that the complex will still be capable of including the Prospect League in its plans. More from The Leaf-Chronicle:

The mayor’s office “needed to move quickly because of the relationship with the partners,” [City spokesman Richard V.] Stevens said, referring to the Tennessee State Soccer Association and the Prospect League, both of which have said they want to bring teams and tourism deals worth tens, perhaps hundreds of millions of dollars to Clarksville.

The land deal rejected by the council in a tight vote on May 3 can only come back up within 12 months if there’s a substantial change to the ordinance.

“This is a substantial change but doesn’t reduce the capability of attracting the soccer association and the Prospect League,” Stevens said.

The proposal is set to be considered by the city finance committee, and will go before the full city council afterwards if it is approved by the committee. The complex has been pitched for a site near Interstate 24 exit 8.
