A major milestone in the construction of the Augusta GreenJackets‘ (Low A; Sally League) SRP Park was reached last week, when sod was placed for the playing surface.
Some of the finishing touches for SRP Park are coming together ahead of its opening next month. Last week, workers at the ballpark’s construction site began laying the sod for the playing surface–a milestone as the GreenJackets prepare for their home opener in April.
As the playing surface went into place, local officials expressed their anticipation for SRP Park’s upcoming debut. More from The Aiken Standard:
They started laying sod on the field around Wednesday, according to North Augusta City Council member David McGhee.
Thirty-three days from the day the GreenJackets play their first game on the field, it’s taking shape.
“It actually looks like a ballfield now,” said McGhee, who has taken a leading role in the massive development.
“It brings this to more of a state of reality,” said McGhee, whose professional background is in construction. “It makes you understand where everything is, and makes it ‘pow.’ It gives it that ‘wow’ factor.”
While the GreenJackets will play their home opener on April 12, the facility will host at least one game before then, as a college contest between Clemson and Georgia is scheduled for April 10.
SRP Park is being constructed as an anchor of the larger Riverside Village development in North Augusta, SC. Our own Jarah Wright wrote a preview of the facility in January.
