Blue Jays Extending Rogers Centre Netting

Toronto Blue Jays

The Toronto Blue Jays have confirmed that they are extending protective netting at the Rogers Centre, with the project scheduled to be finished by Opening Day.

Numerous teams at the major league level are moving forward with plans to extend protective netting at their ballparks, with many announcing their intentions in the period since a young girl was severely struck by a foul ball at Yankee Stadium in September. Shortly after that incident, it was learned that the Blue Jays planned to reevaluate the netting at Rogers Centre, and potentially make a change for the 2018 season.

On Monday, the Blue Jays confirmed that the ballpark’s protective netting will be extended. According to the team’s announcement, the current netting behind home plate will be replaced, with the new netting spanning to the outfield ends of both dugouts. In addition to providing more coverage than the outgoing netting, the new netting will be approximately 10 feet taller.

The new netting will be in place by Opening Day at Rogers Centre, which is scheduled for March 29. That afternoon, the Blue Jays will begin the season with a matchup against the New York Yankees.
