The effort to build a new ballpark for the Las Vegas 51s (Class AAA; Pacific Coast League) moved forward on Wednesday, when Clark County signed off on the plan.
Howard Hughes Corp. is moving forward with the construction of a new 51s ballpark in Downtown Summerlin, an area that also includes City National Arena, the training facility for the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights. Once it opens, the ballpark will replace Cashman Field as home of the 51s.
Plans for the ballpark were unveiled last month, and the project took another step forward on Wednesday, when Clark County Commissioners approved a use permit for the project. Work on the project could begin in December or January, and potentially lead to the 51s moving into the ballpark for the 2019 season. More from The Las Vegas Review-Journal:
“This is a big green light in the project,” company spokesman and vice president Tom Warden said after the meeting. “We could be moving dirt as early as late December or early January.”
The Las Vegas Ballpark will be the new home of Las Vegas 51s Triple-A minor league team.
During their zoning meeting Wednesday, county commissioners unanimously granted the ballpark project a use permit.
A waiver was also awarded so the Howard Hughes Corp. can begin grading the site before the approval of off-site improvement plans and the recording of a final map. The company must have $5 million insurance in exchange.
A major step toward the facility was taken last month, when the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority’s (LVCA) approved a 20-year, $80-million naming rights agreement. As part of that deal, the LVCA will have the right to stage as many as 100 events annually in the $150-million Las Vegas Ballpark, as well as two Major League Baseball spring-training exhibitions and two other MLB exhibitions.
Amenities wise, the Las Vegas Ballpark will offer a unique mix of features. According to a previous announcement from Howard Hughes Corp., the ballpark is expected to seat 10,000 and feature a wide array of seating options, including 22 suites, along with berm seating, club seats, party decks, and more.
