Amarillo Ballpark Design Concept Receives Approval

Proposed Amarillo ballpark, July 20, 2017

Amarillo officials have taken an important step toward approving the design concept of a new ballpark that is slated to open for the San Antonio Missions (Class AA; Texas League) in 2019.

As the planning process continues, officials are trying to finalize a design concept from Populous for the new facility. A particular design concept (shown above) is moving forward, as the Local Government Corp. gave it unanimous approval through a vote last week.

This does not finalize the look of the ballpark, as the Amarillo City Council will have to sign off on the concept. Still, the design is already being greeted by enthusiasm from several city officials. More from the Amarillo Globe-News:

“When I looked at it, I immediately saw something iconic,” [city councilman Eddy] Sauer said. “I felt like I could see the Potter County Courthouse, the Santa Fe Building. It was special, I felt, with an eye for what we already had downtown.”

The drawing by architecture firm Populous next needs to be approved by the Amarillo City Council. The design concept is not listed on the City Council’s upcoming agenda.

Sauer and Councilman Howard Smith both serve on the LGC, which unanimously voted in favor of the design at Wednesday’s meeting, and Mayor Ginger Nelson said she was “inclined to approve it” when asked Friday.

Those three votes would be enough to carry it through the five-person council.

Amarillo is slated to receive the Missions as part of a series of moves of Elmore Sports Group-owned franchises. The Colorado Springs Sky Sox (Class AAA; Pacific Coast League) will move to San Antonio to take the place of the Double-A Missions, while the Helena Brewers (Rookie; Pioneer League) will take over for the Sky Sox in Colorado Springs.
