Bryan Frew to Own Hastings Expedition League Team

Bryan Frew has been confirmed as the owner of Hastings, NE‘s entry in the Expedition League, a summer collegiate circuit that will begin play in 2018.

Frew, who had been the coach of Grand Island Home Federal baseball, will serve a large role with the Hastings club, as he will be the team’s owner owner/general manager/head coach. The Hastings entry will play its games at Duncan Field, a ballpark that was originally built in 1940.

The news that Frew will be overseeing operations in Hastings comes as the Expedition League prepares for its launch. In addition to Hastings, the league is currently slated to have a team in Canada (Brandon, Manitoba), along with United States teams in Gering, Nebraska; Aberdeen, Pierre, and Spearfish, South Dakota; Dickinson and Minot; North Dakota; and Casper, Wyoming. More from The Grand Island Independent:

After gathering some information about the Expedition League, Frew left a message with league president Steve Wagner. He wanted to encourage a franchise for Grand Island, which Frew thought would be a great fit if some renovations were done at Ryder Park.

“I was just interested as a fan who would buy season tickets to take my family,” Frew said.

Prior to a Home Federal home game a few days later, Frew got a call back.

“It surprised me when the league president called me back, but he asked me to think about ownership,” Frew said. “I have a lot of experience coaching for seven years, three years as a head coach. I’m a CPA, so I know how to run a business.

Frew is expected to participate in an introductory press conference with Hastings officials on September 5.
