Safeco Field Naming Rights Deal Will Not be Extended

Seattle Mariners

Safeco Field‘s name will change in the future, as the Seattle Mariners and Safeco Insurance have stated that their naming rights agreement will not be extended.

The current naming rights deal between the Mariners and Safeco Insurance runs through the 2018 season. In advance of that date, the two sides are confirming that the agreement will not be extended beyond that period. According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Mariners, the team is beginning preliminary discussions with prospective ballpark naming rights partners.

“Safeco Insurance has been a great partner of the Mariners dating back to the earliest days of the franchise, including the ballpark naming rights for the last 20 years,” Mariners president & COO Kevin Mather said in the statement. “We appreciate everything Safeco has done over the years to support our organization and look forward to continuing the relationship in the future.”

“It has been an honor to host the naming rights for the last 20 years and we look forward to continuing our relationship with the Mariners. While our marketing approach is changing, we intend to remain active partners with the organization for years to come,” Tyler Asher, Safeco Insurance president, said in the statement. “Safeco and our parent company Liberty Mutual are committed to our presence in the Seattle community, by providing jobs to thousands of people in the region and supporting non-profits that help make Seattle one of the finest and exciting cities in the U.S. and across the globe.”

Safeco Insurance and the Mariners originally agreed to a naming rights partnership in 1998, one year before Safeco Field opened during the 1999 season. That original agreement was for 20 years.
