A recently-released proposal suggests upgrades to the Ballpark at Harbor Yard that could help it host other events, leaving a question about the status of the Bridgeport Bluefish (independent; Atlantic League).
Bridgeport is currently engaged in a one-year agreement with the Bluefish, and has put a future lease for the ballpark out to bid. As was noted here last month, there are multiple proposals on the table, including one from the Bluefish, a plan to overhaul the facility into a soccer venue, and another that would convert the ballpark into a concert/event amphitheater.
Recently, mayor Joe Ganim unveiled a proposal for a $185 million project that would create an entertainment district surrounding the Ballpark at Harbor Yard. Upgrades to the ballpark were included in that package, with the plan being to overhaul the venue “in order to create a multifunctional sports and entertainment center,” according to a document on the plan that included some renderings that depicted non-baseball events taking place on the field.
That has caused some to wonder if Ganim’s vision is in fact more in line the amphitheater pitch, which is being led by developer Howard Saffan and concert promoter Live Nation. Ganim has, however, denied that he prefers the amphitheater concept, and Bluefish owner Frank Boulton says that he is keeping an mind when it comes to the mayor’s ideas. More from CT Post:
Boulton said he has worked hard to keep baseball in Bridgeport and is open to the Ganim administration’s ideas. He noted while the graphics in Ganim’s brochure show a stage, they also show a baseball infield.
“I understand they want to do more than just have baseball,” Boulton said. “I’m certainly willing to listen if something makes sense economically and can operate side by side.” But, he added, that would likely require the installation of artificial turf to accomodate more use.
“I have no problem with playing on it,” Boulton said.
The Bluefish have played a the Ballpark at Harbor Yard since its opening in 1998. It is adjacent to Webster Bank Arena, a venue that has seen some high-profile performers over the years, including Elton John and Bruce Springsteen.
