Good Start for World Series Ratings

There is still more baseball to be played, but early signs point to a nice boost for World Series television ratings

Over the first two games, there have been solid viewing numbers for the World Series between the Cleveland Indians and Chicago Cubs. Tuesday’s opener drew an overnight rating of 12.6, which was followed by Wednesday’s overnight of 11.3. The mark for Wednesday is impressive when considering the game’s early start time, as MLB opted to move the contest up to 7:00 because of weather-related concerns.

These trends numbers allowed the opening games of the 2016 World Series to be among the most-watched in recent history. More from The Hollywood Reporter:

The strong metered market showing on Fox, more than a 20 percent improvement from the comparable game last year, continues the very favorable ratings performance for this year’s bid for the MLB championship. Tuesday night’s preliminary numbers, a 12.6 overnight rating among households, translated to the best World Series start since 2009 — 19.4 million viewers and a 5.6 rating among adults 18-49.

Starting with a split of the first two games at Cleveland’s Progressive Field, the World Series is shaping up to be fairly competitive. The games will shift to Wrigley Field tomorrow night, which will mark the first World Series contest played at the ballpark since 1945. With the Friday-Sunday stretch to be at the Friendly Confines, and the potential for a six or seven game series in place, the World Series will have time to pick up viewers along the way.
