North Augusta Holds Key Vote on Project Jackson

New Augusta GreenJackets ballpark

On Monday, the North Augusta City Council voted to re-establish its municipal improvement district (MID) for a new Augusta GreenJackets (Low A; Sally League) ballpark.

The ballpark is being attached to a waterfront redevelopment plan that is known as Project Jackson. Along with the new home for the GreenJackets, Project Jackson is set to include residential units, retail, lodging space, parking ramps, and other amenities.

North Augusta has previously authorized the ballpark and Project Jackson as a MID, thereby allowing the city to use tax revenues from the area to pay off related debts. The issue, however, was timing. Previous votes relating to the MID from last fall and this March were no longer valid, so another vote was necessary to keep the project on track. More from the Aiken Standard:

Councilman James Adams was absent for the vote. Two more readings are required.

Similar votes establishing MIDs were held in October 2015 and March 2016, but the timelines establishing those improvement districts expired, necessitating Monday night’s vote, according to City officials.

“These things have a shelf life,” said North Augusta Mayor Lark Jones.

North Augusta has been working to finalize every component of the project. Reports from this summer indicated that the earliest the ballpark will open is 2018.
