Football returning to Fenway Park in 2015

Fenway Park football

Football is returning to Fenway Park in the form of a Shamrock Series game between Boston College and Notre Dame on Nov. 21, 2015.

Football was played at Fenway Park frequently over the years; Boston College played games there (as shown in the photo above), as did the NFL’s Boston Redskins (before a move to Washington) and Boston Yanks and the AFL’s Boston Patriots. It was the Patriots — now the New England Patriots — who played the last football game at Fenway Park on Dec. 1, 1968. The Patriots subsequently moved their home games to Boston College and later Harvard Stadium before finding a permanent home in Foxboro in 1971.

Notre Dame annually schedules a neutral-site game as part of the Shamrock Series, but moving it to Boston is certainly an interesting — and probably very lucrative — move.

Fenway Park

“We are pleased to bring one of football’s most historic rivalries to Fenway Park as we host the Fighting Irish and Eagles in what will be the first football game at Fenway in 47 years,” said Fenway Sports Management President and Red Sox EVP/COO Sam Kennedy. “We look forward to hosting Notre Dame and Boston College, and welcoming the many alumni from both schools to New England for what we hope will be a memorable matchup.”

The 2015 football game won’t be the first time Notre Dame and Boston College have faced each other at Fenway Park. On January 4, 2014, the two schools will compete in an outdoor hockey game as part of Citi Frozen Fenway 2014, a two week series of hockey, skating, and sledding events.
