The conversion of Indianapolis’s Bush Stadium to high-end apartments has been a resounding success, with 90 percent of the units already pre-leased before the August opening.
Bush Stadium was the home of the Indianapolis Indians through from 1931 through 1996, when the team moved to downtown’s Victory Field. It opened in 1931 as Perry Stadium and was renamed Victory Field in 1942 to honor the American war effort. It was later renamed Bush Stadium in 1967 for Indianapolis native and MLB player Donnie Bush. The old Indianapolis Clowns of the Negro Leagues also played there. It sat empty for several years after the Indians moved to a new downtown ballpark, before a redevelopment plan emerged calling for 138 loft-style apartments on the site. From WISH TV:
Items like the original iron gates fans passed through, the art deco pillars and concrete stands. Original doors to the stadiums ticket booths are now closet doors in two apartments.
While the majority of apartments are being built where fans used to sit and watch the games, a few are in some unique spots.
Wood paneled walls and a fireplace were once the office of the team’s president. Soon it will be someone’s home. Another apartment space was used for a very different purpose during the stadium’s heyday.
