Sharks named top organization in FCBL

Futures Collegiate Baseball LeagueMore awards: The Martha’s Vineyard Sharks has been named 2013 Organization of the Year in the summer-collegiate Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL).

One of the original four teams in the FCBL the Sharks made some drastic changes to the “Shark Tank” to improve their fan experience. Under the direction of their General Manager and CFO, Jerry Murphy, the Sharks added lights as well as 290 box seats from Oriole Park at Camden Yards (home of the Baltimore Orioles). In addition, they added a press box and moved the backstop in 13 feet. All of these changes increased fan involvement and attendance at the Shark Tank, which increased by approximately 15 percent from 2012. These additions, combined with a much improved team, helped the Sharks to capture the 2013 FCBL Championship.

“Jerry worked day and night to see this project through,” said FCBL Commissioner Chris Hall. “Not only did he have to raise the funds but he was personally installing seats.  He had great volunteers and staff, including Vice President of Baseball Operations Bob Tankard, helping him. They should be extremely proud of their efforts. The league and its board of directors are very thankful for the Sharks’ continued effort to improve its fan experience and product to better the FCBL.”

It was a tremendous year for the Sharks on the field as well.  In addition to the FCBL League Championship, their field manager, Mike Miller, was named Manager of the Year, shortstop Dylan Tice was named league MVP and Defensive Player of the Year, pitcher Bob Carbaugh was named Pitcher of the Year and outfielder Ryan Siegel led the league in batting average at .373.
