Padres pitching for future All-Star Game

San Diego PadresThe new San Diego Padres owners are making their mark on the franchise in multiple ways, with the most recent move being a pitch to host a future All-Star Game at Petco Park.

The Padres have twice hosted All-Star Games, both times at Jack Murphy Stadium/Qualcomm Stadium. Petco Park has never hosted a match, as previous Padres ownership/management passed on presentations.

“We’ve made the formal request of Major League Baseball,” Padres President/CEO Tom Garfinkel told MLB.com. “We’re in line with a lot of other clubs that would like an All-Star Game. “We think that San Diego and Petco Park are as deserving as anyone in baseball to get an All-Star Game. Petco Park is an ideal environment for a marquee event like that.”

The soonest the Padres could host a game is 2015, especially with MLB Commissioner Bud Selig alternative hosts between the leagues. The New York Mets are hosting the 2013 game at Citi Field, while the Minnesota Twins are hosting the 2014 game at Target Field. We expect to hear about a few other National League teams making pitches for the 2015 game in coming weeks.
