Pecos League makes debut in Santa Fe

Santa Fe FuegosThe lack of beer didn’t seem to matter to the hundreds of fans showing up for the debut of independent Pecos League baseball in Santa Fe, where the Fuego launched a home opener yesterday.

We don’t cover the Pecos League much: the six-team circuit has been a struggling entity that’s played in some pretty marginal cities (i.e. Ruidoso, N.M.). We also tend not to take too seriously indy circuits that don’t include attendance figures in their box scores. But give league founder Andrew Dunn credit: he and other league owners have hung in there and developed a six-team league that’s in some good markets (Santa Fe, Las Cruces, Roswell and Alpine, Texas), some playing in former MiLB venues.

Yesterday the Fuego played before an announced 1,150 fans at Fort Marcy Park (though the local paper pegged the actual attendance at 700 or so) with lines of folks waiting to get into the game. No beer was on tap: the city put some onerous requirements on the team to limit sales to a designated, fenced-in beer garden and the team didn’t prep the area in time to pour at the game.
