SwampDogs to launch season as planned; three remain hospitalized

Fayetteville SwampDogsThree members of the Fayetteville SwampDogs (summer collegiate; Coastal Plain League) front office remain hospitalized after a ballpark explosion, and the team is prepping for the scheduled season launch on Tuesday.

Team owner/GM/coach Darrell Handelsman, SwampDogs operations manager Mark Wilderman and intern Jonathan Wilson-Daughtner are still listed in serious condition at UNC Hospital after a propane explosion Thursday at J.P. Riddle Stadium. A gas leak on a commercial-grade grill caused an explosion when lit, creating damage in the grill structure and sending four to the hospital.

The game plan, as of now, is for Handelsman’s assistant coaches to take control of the team, with assistant GM Jeremy Aagard stepping up to manage the team’s daily operations. The team’s home opener is set for Wednesday.

Handelsman and his father, Lew Handelsman, own the SwampDogs as well as the Wilmington Sharks, also of the Coastal Plain League.
