Goodbye, Siebert Field

Minnesota Golden GophersThe current version of Siebert Field is entering the bottom of the ninth, as the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers prep for a final game there next week.

Siebert Field has long been neglected by the University and is basically falling apart; many of the grandstand bleachers have been removed, and the team has played a majority of games in recent years at the Metrodome and to a lesser degree Target Field

But after two years of fundraising, coach John Anderson is finally seeing a new ballpark in the works: the first phase of construction will begin in May, with the hope the Gophers can play at least part of the 2013 season outdoors. The new facility won’t be up to the level of college ballpark palaces opening in the South, but it will be a vast improvement on the current Siebert Field, where a lot of history was made: this is where Paul Molitor and Dave Winfield played their college ball. More from the Minnesota Daily.
