Crane group lands Astros

Houston AstrosJim Crane, who lost out to Nolan Ryan in a bid for the Texas Rangers, has perhaps the next best thing for someone in the Lone Star State: he’s heading a local group buying the Houston Astros from Drayton McLane in a deal announced today.

No word yet on the purchase price, though we expect to hear a final price before the end of the day.

Crane, who also attempted to buy the Chicago Cubs from Tribune Corp., had also made a pitch for the Astros back in 2008. Then, McLane passed.

Major League Baseball must still sign off on the deal. That’s expected to happen.

McLane has owned the Astros since 1992. Since then the team moved from the Astrodome to Minute Maid Park and is on the verge of establishing its own regional sports network with the NBA’s Houston Rockets.
