Sharks ended up on top for the name of a new summer-collegiate team slated to play out of Martha’s Vineyard.
“Choosing a name for our club was a difficult but exciting process,” team general manager Jerry Murphy said. “In the end, Sharks was a natural fit for a team in Martha’s Vineyard, and we hope that our fans will like it as much as we do.”
The 1975 Academy Award-winning movie Jaws was filmed on Martha’s Vineyard, while New England’s largest annual offshore fishing event, the Monster Shark, is also based on the island.
After sorting through hundreds of entries, the organization pared down the selections to four finalists last week: the Sharks, Islanders, Osprey and Fighting Clams. A logo will be unveiled for the club shortly.
