Amarillo Gold Sox to return?

American AssociationAn unconfirmed report out of Amarillo has the new independent American Association team being called the Amarillo Gold Sox, with Mark Lee signing on as general manager.

The report comes on a blog run by the Globe News.

There may be a few issues: amarillogoldsox.com is currently used by a youth baseball team in Amarillo. But there’s no trademark issue (yes, we checked on TESS); the independent Pecos League had pitched Gold Sox as well, but apparently didn’t trademark the name then.

It’s a smart move: the Gold Sox were a staple of Amarillo baseball when Potter County Stadium hosted Class AA Texas League ball. And Mark Lee, the former Gold Sox and Padres pitcher who was successful running the Amarillo Dillas (independent; United League Baseball), carries a lot of credibility in the community.
