Yuma Scorpions missing payroll, looking at move

Players with the Yuma Scorpions (independent; Golden Baseball League) have not been paid since early June, and the league is openly looking for a new home for what was once one of the leading teams in the circuit.

Yuma used to rank among the league leaders in attendance, but some miscalculations in recent years about the team’s ownership and management have put it in some serious financial straits. A deal to bring in players from Columbia last season fell through, and Golden Gloves Baseball was brought in at the last moment to run that team.

Today Golden Glove Baseball is failing to meet payroll, sponsors and fans are down at Desert Sun Stadium, and league CEO David Kaval is openly talking about finding a new home for the team, such as Mexicali. It’s gotten to the point where series are being moved out of town because of a lack of interest in the team.
