Japanese teams in the mix for spring training?

Camelback Ranch

Tucson officials say they’re close to signing some Japanese teams to train this coming spring at Tucson Electric Park, provided Major League Baseball teams are willing to play some exhibition games — and apparently they are.

At a press conference yesterday officials with the Pima County Sports and Tourism Authority said they’ve met with the controlling authorities — Nippon Professional Baseball and Major League Baseball — as well as five Japanese teams. The Japanese teams are willing to come to Tucson to train, provided they can play MLB teams — there’s no allure for them to travel so far if they’re only playing Japanese teams.

Tucson officials say MLB teams have expressed interest in playing the Japanese teams. As described to us, all sides are fairly close to coming to some sort of agreement. It’s a win-win for all involved: spring training will return to Tucson, and more games will be on the schedule.
