The Lake County Fielders have a formal groundbreaking for a new ballpark scheduled for Nov. 5; good thing, as the ballpark's first game is officially slated for June 11.
Despite some whispers about financing issues, the Lake County Fielders (independent; Northern League) are still a go for the 2010: the team is part of the official Northern League schedule released today, and the first game at the team's new ballpark is slated for June 11, 2010.
That will indeed be a tight timeline for getting enough work done at the ballpark to allow play: though some site work has been done at the ballpark location, the formal groundbreaking for the facility is scheduled for Nov. 5. With winter approaching, that is indeed a tight timeline.
The schedule has the team opening play on June 11, hosting the Gary-SouthShore Railcats, followed by home games against Winnipeg and Fargo-Moorhead. Of course, there's some give in the schedule; those first few series could be reversed, with the Fielders playing as a road team for a decent chunk of the season.
