Boston Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy announces he’s been fighting lung cancer and is leaving the booth indefinitely.
“I want to focus on completing my recovery so that I can return to work without distractions or interruptions,” Remy said in a statement. “I hope that disclosing my bout with cancer will reinforce the dangers of smoking to every member of Red Sox Nation, especially children.”
Remy is a longtime smoker, and he’s underwent surgery last fall to combat the lung cancer. Since then he’s been battling pneumonia and a lung infection.
In the short term former Red Sox reliever Dennis Eckersley will work the rest of the current homestamd with former Red Sox outfielder Dave Roberts filling in for the team’s West Coast trip. No word on when Remy, one of the most distrinctive broadcasters in the game, will return.
