Yankees respond to market, slash top-end ticket prices

Faced with the prospect of the best seats at the new Yankee Stadium going unsold, the New York Yankees have slashed prices on high-end ducats and offering free tickets to existing buyers.

More than 40 percent of the front-row tickets have been cut by up to 50 percent, while those already buying the pricey tickets will be offered additional seats.

The Yankees had established high-end seating areas in the first nine rows of 25 sections and prices the tickets there between $250 and $2,500.  Those seats just didn’t sell, leading to game broadcasts showing vast expanses of empty seats behind the plate. The Yankees brass was nervous about this pricing even before the season began — Randy Levine famously quipped that the team would need to look at a pricing restructuring for next season — and the team decided to accelerate the process. The Yankees had a slow start to the season in terms of attendance, filling Yankee Stadium to only 85 percent of capacity in the first three weeks of the season.

Other ticket prices are being lowered. The first row in the Delta Sky360 Suite is being lowered from $750 a game to $550, and the team is offering a buy-three-get-one-free program for the 15 sections between the bases.
