Latest run at Tucson pro baseball winding down
Maybe there are some cities unsuited for pro baseball. That would include Tucson, where the Tucson Padres (Class AAA; Pacific Coast League) are 26 home games from a move to El Paso. Granted, the Tucson Padres were never slated to spend more than three or four seasons at Kino Stadium after the franchise was relocated […]
Arizona wins College World Series; Hi Corbett is seen as big factor
The University of Arizona won the College World Series in convincing fashion, and players credit the program’s move to Hi Corbett Field as a contributing factor. This was the first year the Wildcats played at the venerable WPA-era facility, used for spring training and minor-league ball for decades. Indeed, we’ve covered this story many times […]
For Wildcats, move to Hi Corbett Field pays off
As the University of Arizona prepares to host an NCAA Regional, one thing is clear: the move to Hi Corbett Field this season has paid off handsomely for the Wildcats program. The Wildcats have always been a power in college baseball, but Sancet Stadium — a nice little ballpark literally in the shadows of the […]
Wildcats settling in at Hi Corbett
No issues in moving from Sancet Stadium to venerable Hi Corbett Field: the Arizona Wildcats are 19-7 so far playing in the classic old ballpark and drawing very good crowds. Toros settle suit; will go gently into that good night
The Tucson Toros (independent; North American League) are going away after settling a lawsuit — on fairly favorable terms — over an eviction from Hi Corbett Field. Toros owner Jay Zucker settled with the city for $300,000 and announced he was folding the franchise, according to KOLD. He filed suit earlier this year, saying Tucson […]
Toros suing to get back into Hi Corbett Field
Jay Zucker is suing to get back the Tucson Toros (independent; North American League) lease to Hi Corbett Field after it was terminated by the city last June. The issue: Zucker, the former owner of the Tucson Sidewinders (Class AAA; Pacific Coast League) held a lease for the Toros, who played the 2009 and 2010 […]
Arizona Wildcats to Hi Corbett Field for 2012 and beyond
The Arizona Wildcats are moving to Tucson’s Hi Corbett Field for 2012 and beyond, as the program’s leaders decided a larger and more professional venue was needed to replace Jerry Kindall Field at Frank Sancet Stadium, which opened in 1967. Moving off-campus is always a risky move, but University of Arizona officials say the ability […]
Tucson revoking Toros lease for Hi Corbett; Wildcats, T-Padres to follow?
Tucson is in the midst of revoking the Hi Corbett Field lease from the Tucson Toros (independent; North American League), as the city and Pima County look at big changes at where baseball teams play. The Toros played two seasons in the North American League before going on hiatus when the Tucson Padres (Class AAA; […]
