New Amarillo Ballpark Construction Begins in March

Proposed Amarillo ballpark, July 20, 2017

The first steps toward construction of a new Amarillo ballpark for the relocating San Antonio Missions (Class AA; Texas League) will begin March 5, when prep work on the site begins.

The Missions are slated to move to Amarillo for the 2019 season, part of a three-team shift that sees the Colorado Spring Sky Sox (Class AAA; Pacific Coast League) move to San Antonio and the Helena Brewers (Rookie; Pioneer League) move to Colorado Springs. So far Amarillo is the only community to commit to a new ballpark, although officials with the Elmore Sports Group say they’ll need one in San Antonio as well.

In Amarillo, work on the new multiuse venue –as the city is saying — is set to begin March 5, when prep work on the site begins. Reps from Western Builders and Hunt Construction, the major construction vendors, have been working on a calendar with city officials. From Amarillo.com:

“This is the first bid package, so when you look at that, it represents one scope of the project,” Facilities Director Jerry Danforth said. “This is the mass excavation, site preparation and utility contract for the work that is being done underground. There were nine sub-contractors at the pre-bid associated with excavation and three sub-contractors with utilities.”…

Danforth said Western Builders would soon begin the process of installing security fencing, with the next phase of work beyond mass excavation, site preparation and utilities being the NEP package — which involves mechanical, plumbing and electrical jobs.

The Elmore Sports Group is also working on a name-the-team contest, which begins in April. The Missions name and branding will stay in San Antonio for use by the PCL team.
