Subcontractors were recently pitched on work on the new Fayetteville ballpark, the future home of Buies Creek Astros (High A; Carolina League).
A groundbreaking for the facility has been scheduled for August 21, with officials planning to complete the project in time for the 2019 season. Barton Malow is serving as the primary construction firm for the new downtown ballpark, and recently had a chance to present information on the project to prospective subcontractors.
During a presentation on Wednesday, officials from the firm offered details on the construction process and the timelines involved for submitting bids. In addition, information was provided on the type of subcontractors it expects to involve in the project. More from The Fayetteville Observer:
The meeting lasted under an hour, and the Barton Malow people showed several slides as they talked about dates to remember and gave other information on filling out applications. The construction firm is putting a focus on “local and diversity;” 30 percent of the work will be designated to local businesses and ones headed by minorities, disabled, women, veterans and economically disadvantaged owners.
“The city is committed to working local,” Roslyn Henderson said. She’s the senior project manager. “We’re committed to that as well.”
First bids, set to go out in late September, would cover early site work like utilities and earthwork, said Charlie Lewis, the project manager. The main bid in January will cover everything from roofing to signage. Another bid would involve the team owner, the Houston Astros, and would include finishing touches, from lighting to the scoreboard.
As noted, the franchise that will occupy the ballpark is playing as the Buies Creek Astros until the facility is completed, and its home games are taking place Campbell University’s Jim Perry Stadium. In June, finalists for a name-the-team contest were revealed, and the choices included Woodpeckers, Wood Dogs, Fatbacks, Fly Traps and Jumpers. The new name is expected to debut in 2019, coinciding with the ballpark’s opening.
