Elizabethton, TN mayor Curt Alexander is expressing his concerns about the status of the Elizabethton Twins (Rookie; Appalachian League) going forward.
Previous discussions have taken place about the possibility of renovating Joe O’Brein Field, which has hosted the E-Twins since 1974. Last fall, the city council considered a task force recommendation to map out funding for $3.2 million in upgrades to the ballpark, but that still required the city to negotiate terms with the Minnesota Twins.
Discussions with the Twins have run into some uncertainties, according to Alexander. The city has not received official word from the Twins as to whether the club will move forward with a plan to remain in Elizabethton at an upgraded Joe O’Brien Field, which is causing Alexander to express his concern. Alexander said he is still waiting on word from the Minnesota Twins, but he has his doubts.
“I’m sure they’re looking at other locations so what we’re probably really close to focusing on if we want minor-league baseball in Elizabethton it’ll probably be somebody other than the twins”, Alexander said.
The team does have an agreement to use Joe O’Brien Field for the upcoming season. In December, the city approved a one-year lease that ensured the E-Twins would remain in Elizabethton for 2017.
