Turner Field Sale Finalized

Turner Field football

Turner Field‘s next chapter is about to take shape, as Georgia State University and its development partners have finalized a purchase of the facility.

Our sister site, Football Stadium Digest, has more on this story, but the sale will provide Turner Field with a new purpose following the departure of the Atlanta Braves. The Braves, who are set to open SunTrust Park in Cobb County this spring, played at Turner Field from 1997-2016, moving into the facility after it served the 1996 Olympics.

Under Georgia State’s plan, Turner Field will begin hosting football next fall. However, the renovation, which will lower the former ballpark’s capacity, is expected to take place over several phases and will not be completed for a few more years.

Georgia State and its partners, Carter and Oakwood Development, purchased Turner Field and the surrounding parking lots for $30 million. That will allow the area surrounding the venue to be converted into a mixed-use development.

This has been noted here before, but the plan could ultimately reshape the sites of more than one former ballpark. Along with repurposing Turner Field, Georgia State plans to construct a new ballpark for its baseball program on the site of Atlanta Fulton County Stadium. According to an announcement by the university, construction of the baseball facility will be included in a later phase of the project.

Construction on the Turner Field component of the project is slated to begin in February.
