Ratings from game five of the World Series delivered some good news for Major League Baseball, as the contest topped Sunday Night Football

Sunday’s thrilling contest between the Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians on Fox came in with a score of 15.3/24 in metered market ratings. That topped the Sunday Night Football contest on NBC, in which the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles scored an 11.6/8 in the same category. It marked the first time since 2011 that the World Series beat Sunday Night Football in the ratings.

Early ratings for the World Series were strong, with the first two games at Cleveland’s Progressive Field delivering some of the World Series’ highest marks in years. It stood reason that the interest would continue, if not increase, as the series shifted to Wrigley Field over the weekend. When weighing the final numbers, Sunday becomes one of the most-watched World Series games in recent history. More from Deadline.com:

With the final numbers in, Sunday’s comeback by the Chicago Cubs to deny the Cleveland Indians a win of baseball’s big trophy was watched by 23.6 million viewers and a 6.7 rating among adults 18-49. Reconfirming what fast affiliate results were trending towards earlier today and with an upward adjustment of 2 million more viewers, that’s the most eyeballs a MLB Game 5 has had since October 23, 1997. That night saw 24.2 million watch the Florida Marlins beat the Indians 8-7.

Up 37% from the Game 5 clincher of the 2015 World Series, [Sunday’s] battle at Wrigley Field achieved a rare tackle of Sunday Night Football, which had 18.0 million viewers.

MLB will hope that the ratings momentum continues when the series shifts back to Progressive Field tonight.
