Real Sports to Air Robo Ump 2 Segment

Tuesday night will feature what should be an interesting feature on the strike zone, as HBO’s Real Sports with Bryan Gumble airs a segment on Robo Ump 2

Earlier this year, we detailed Robo Ump 2, a night from the San Rafael Pacifics (independent; Pacific Association) that featured MLB Network analyst and former outfielder Eric Byrnes. During a game on June 17, Byrnes served as a home plate umpire while calling balls and strikes using Sportvision’s pitch tracking technology.

The trailer above shows how the process works, but essentially the judgement of the strike zone was left to technology. With tracking software giving virtually everyone a glimpse at the strike zone, there have been continued calls for baseball to begin allowing technology to determine balls and strikes during games. An umpire would still be on the field making the calls, along with making decisions on plays at the plate and other judgements.

Real Sports is going to take an in-depth look at the technology and the reasoning behind integrating it into baseball, but will also feature the perspective of current major league umpire Jerry Crawford. This episode of Real Sports will air at 10:00 p.m. eastern on September 27. It will be available on demand beginning on September 30.
