Spikes Game Delayed by Sheep

Of every delay imaginable, perhaps the least likely to be foreseen is one caused by a stray sheep. The State College Spikes (Short Season A; NY-Penn League), however, experienced that firsthand on Thursday, when a wandering sheep delayed their contest against the visiting Batavia Muckdogs

Thursday’s game featured a Cowboy Rodeo Monkey appearance, and the sheep was part of that promotion. The sheep was in a section of Medlar Field at Lubrano Park that is home to the BB&T Nookie Monster, as mascot that emerges from the outfield wall every time the Spikes score a run.

The Spikes crossed the plate in the bottom of the sixth, prompting an appearance by the Nookie Monster. When the mascot emerged from his space, the sheep made its getaway, and had a few minutes to stroll the outfield. It wandered as far as the right field line before being corralled by the Spikes’ grounds crew.

Along with the delay, the fans were treated to an offensive outburst by the Spikes, who defeated the Muckdogs 15-3.
